Ear Candle/Ear Candling: Argument on Traditional Therapy

Uncoventional therapeutic treatment and rehabilitative procedures  become part of the medical practice nowadays.  First hand, it is unconventional but cheap. Second , these therapies target multiple discomforts. Just for example is acupuncture. Through this treatment, chi is believed to flow naturally after the session causing relief from minor discomfort namely headache, body malaise or fever. However, An old and aged  treatment called Ear Candling has placed controversial concerns over medical practitioners and patients alike.

Asians and Native Americans use Ear Candling way before 2000 B.C. Some practitioners of this generation now offers ear candling sessions which are believed to treat multiple discomforts as well. The therapy is used with a special kind of candle, which they called Ear Candle. This is a hollow candle made of muslin cloth soaked in paraffin or bees wax. The ear candle is to be inserted to a plate with a hole. The plate has dual purpose, to cover the face in case of falling candle debris and to balance the candle during therapy.

Mechanism:

The procedure involves a vacuum means. The heat and the hollow from the ear candle helps in the generation of the vacuum. It slowly sucks out the earwax, toxin, and pressure from the ears and sinuses. It does not cause pain and discomfort.

Indications:

The treatment is often denote to ease and lessen sinus pressure, ear wax removal, tinnitus, TMJ syndrome and the like. Ancient practitioners believe that ear candling can align chakra flow, develop spiritual gain, or soothe mood and mind.

The Debate:

Ear Candling became popularand known in 2006 or 2007. Many have gone into  the treatment as it successfully entices people due to media advertisements. Most of them testify of its positive effects in human body. Actually, many are impressed with the holistic results after the treatment. However, known medical research journals have released reports of its ineffective and hazardous effect to the ear anatomy. As a result, FDA disproves its practice. Yet despite of research results, nobody has ever reported any ear injuries caused by ear candling.
